Asides on the oboe (2002)
for solo oboe
These four short pieces were composed for David Nuttall in preparation for an oboe concerto which we still plan to bring to fruition one day. The pieces are quite improvisatory in nature, except for the third which reworked a melodic sketch made some years before. The title is lifted from a poem of the same name by Wallace Stevens. Stevens's “Asides on the oboe” is also in four sections, but that really is the extent of the connection between the two.
“Asides on the oboe” is dedicated to Richard Meale on the occasion of his 70 th birthday.
